Mace walked out his front door and hit the sidewalk, shoving his hands deep into his jacket pockets. He breathed in the crisp, cold air of freedom. To his surprise, the address Fee had given was within walking distance of the place theyâd chosen together. For one brief moment, he wondered if that had been intentional. But no, he thought, why would she? Heâd left her with no reason to do that.
The Christmas lights the city had festooned across the streets and wound through tree limbs mocked him with memories of Christmases past.
Heâd been wrong. He knew that now, but he didnât have a clue how to make it right. Or even if he could. He could blame a lot of things. The shock of the accusation, of being walked from his own home in handcuffs. The bewilderment, then the fear at hearing the evidence stacked up against him, things he knew nothing about.
But those things should never have turned him against the one person, beside Linc and his parents, whoâd stood steadfast by his innocence. He still couldnât fathom that heâd been tried and convicted for a crime that someone else had committed and that the person or persons had never been found. Because no one had looked. Heâd been judged guilty. Case closed.
His steps slowed as he approached Feeâs house. Heâd never think of it as her home. Her home was the house theyâd chosen to start their life together. At least it should have been. He took the path set with pavers from her driveway to her front door. His steps sounded as hollow as heâd felt inside since his arrest.
Felecia answered almost as soon as he pressed the doorbell and he wondered if sheâd been watching at a window. He couldnât read anything in her expression.
She stepped back. âCome in.â
âNo,â he said quietly. âI came to apologize. Whatever you did, why ever you did it, itâs done and Iâm not dragging you into what I have to do now.â
Feeâs eyebrows lifted. âThatâs an apology?â
âI wanted to hurt you and I guess I succeeded but it didnât make me feel any better. And it never will. I was a jackass and Iâm sorry for that.â
âYes, you were,â she said evenly. âYou still are but you may as well come in. Youâve already dragged me into what you have to do and thereâs no way to undo that. You canât un-drag me, just as you canât unsay what you said or unthink what you thought.â
âWhat do you mean I canât un-drag you?â
âItâs too late for that. I wonât let you.â She sighed. âJust come in, Mace.â
Frowning, he walked through the door and waited as she closed it behind him. âWhatâs up, Fee?â
âDo you remember Nathan Crenshaw?â
âWayneâs foreman? Yeah ⦠why?â
âCome into the dining room. I have my laptop set up there.â
He followed as she led the way, eyeing the black cat who seemed to have a thing for tables and countertops. When Fee gestured to a seat across
